International Tipping Guide

  1. North America
    • United States & Canada: Tipping is expected. Restaurants 15–20%, bars $1 per drink, taxis 10–15%, and hotel staff $1–5 for various services.
  2. Europe
    • Western Europe: Often included in the bill; if not, leave 5–10% in restaurants. Rounding up is usually sufficient for taxis and bars.
    • Southern Europe: Tipping is less expected; round up the bill or add 5–10% for great service.
    • Eastern Europe: Tips are appreciated in major cities, especially in restaurants (10–15%).
  3. Asia
    • Japan & South Korea: Tipping is generally not practiced and may even be refused.
    • China & Southeast Asia: Tipping is optional, but in tourist areas, 5–10% for great service is appreciated. Tour guides may expect tips.
  4. Australia & New Zealand
    • Tipping is not widely expected but is appreciated for exceptional service. Leave 10% in restaurants if you wish.
  5. Latin America
    • Mexico: Tipping is expected; 10–15% in restaurants, small tips for hotel staff and taxis.
    • Other Countries: Tips are appreciated in restaurants, with 10% as a general guideline.
  6. Middle East & Africa
    • Tipping is common; 10–15% in restaurants is appreciated, and small tips for hotel and service staff are customary.

General Rule: If unsure, round up or leave 5–10% for good service, especially in more tourist-focused places.
